Science Achievements 2010-11

Philip Eakins, Sam Boon and Arran Williams received
Nuffield Bursaries for research projects completed during the last summer
break. They also received a gold CREST awards and Philip’s project will be
featured at the Big Bang festival in July.

Having won the regional final of the ‘Top of the Bench’
competition, Charles McCullock, John Warburton, Dominic Fowler-Williams and
Leo Westbrook travelled to Imperial College for the National Finals in
London. They came a very creditable 8th out of the 32 teams
present.

The Olympiads produced silver medals for Emma Redhead,
Philip Eakins, and Riko Yu in Chemistry. Sophie Mathew-Jones and Philip
Eakins achieved bronze medals in Chemistry and Biology respectively.

The Senior Science club achieved 8 gold CREST awards for
Andrew White, Gregory Kane, Jack Granby, Curtis Wright, Andrew Hoyland, Neil
Lawrence and Adam Snee for a project on the effectiveness of the ingredients
in toothpaste. Sophie Mathew-Jones impressively finished research, started
last year, into Cillit Bang.

The Science in the Communities group has expanded to now
include the Birkenhead and Tarporley cub groups and even a nursery school.
James Kewin, Allan and Kyle Lowey have been heavily involved this year.

The Science Fair again attracted large numbers and the
following received bronze CREST awards for their involvement in this event
and for their leading role in the science clubs;- Sebastian MacTaggart, Ben
Appleby, David Nevin, Oliver Jones, James Howe, Sam Keenan, Paul Gogerty,
Ciara O’Sullivan, Safiya Rafiq, India Collister, and Rosie Durband.

The Biology UK Challenge for Years 9 and 10 produced some
exceptional results including 2 gold medals for Benjamin Pearson and John
Warburton. Silvers for Oliver George, Samuel Wells and Kevin Wong. Whilst
Thomas Atherton, Samuel Berkson, Connor Lee, Conor O’Sullivan and Lewis Tran
achieved bronze medals.

The North West region Physics Olympics were held at the
University of Liverpool. The team members were Johnny Daly, George Pinder,
Edward Brown and Andrew Hoyland. They came a creditable 10th out
of the 30 teams present.

Jack Granby, James Moses and Andrew White represented the
school at the RSC Young Analyst competition.

Tom Atherton, John Warburton, Kevin Wong, and Conor
O’Sullivan all won places at the Salters’ Chemistry Camps at various
universities this summer.

The Salters’ Chemistry Festival team this year is Sam
Gavin-Pitt, Edward George, Joshua Gibson, and India Wild.

Max Keeling and Joshua Black were this years recipients
of the Shell Global research placements.

Richard Jones attended an Engineering Development Trust
Headstart course

The Year 9 Solar group has produced some interesting work
on the fauna found on the school grounds and on the behaviour of
chimpanzees, they have even adopted one!

Many other students have benefited from field trips, UCAS
support lectures and work placements
